Bali to Crack Down on Foreign Tourists Using Crypto As a Form of Payment

The Bali Provincial Government has announced that it will take strict action against foreign tourists who use cryptocurrency as a means of payment in various places, including hotels, restaurants, shopping centers, and tourism destinations.

Governor Wayan Koster said that those who violate provisions related to their visa permit, use crypto, and engage in other inappropriate activities will face administrative and criminal penalties, including deportation and closure of their business premises.

The prohibition of using currencies other than rupiah as a means of payment in Indonesia is specified in Law No. 7 of 2011 on Currency, and violators can be fined and imprisoned. While crypto is allowed as an asset, it is banned as a payment instrument, according to Head of Bank Indonesia Bali Representative Office Trisno Nugroho.
