Reported Decrypt, during an interview at the annual Mainnet 2023 summit hosted by Messari, Coinbase's Chief Legal Officer, Paul Grewal, responded to the question of whether "Base will have tokens" by saying, "We haven't completely ruled out this possibility, and I believe tokens could be viable at some point in the future. However, right now, we are not focused on the protocol's economics and tokenization. Regulatory clarity is also very important."

Base has consistently stated that it has no plans to issue tokens since its launch, and recently, its X (Twitter) profile has explicitly mentioned, "We have no plans to issue a new network token."
