Ordinals, the Bitcoin NFT Project, Minted 1,400 NFT Daily, Spurred Heated Debate

Ordinals, a new project that allows users to put NFT-like assets on the Bitcoin blockchain, has sparked controversy. With over 3,700 Bitcoin NFTs being minted via Ordinals, it resulted in transactions that take up the full block szie of Bticoin network and increasing network fees. Daily mint is growing rapidly with 1,400 NFT minted a single day on February 5, according to a Dune dashboard.

The launch of Ordinals has reignited the long-standing debate in the Bitcoin community about block sizes, legitimate transactions, and whether media like JPEGs should be put on the Bitcoin blockchain. The data size of these transactions is much more than those typically conducted on the blockchain. The increase in fees has led to some Bitcoin maximalists calling Ordinals an affront to the Bitcoin ethos, while others say the project spams the decentralized network.
