Shanghai Upgrade Finalized on Ethereum Goerli Testnet

The Shanghai upgrade was triggered on the Ethereum Goerli testnet at epoch 162304 on March 14th at 10:26pm UTC. Because of the low network participation at the time it was triggered, the upgrade was finalized 15 epochs later. Withdrawals of staked $ETH are being processed on Goerli.

According to CoinDesk, when the upgrade was triggered, the validator participation rate was as low as 29%. It was because several validator nodes hadn't upgraded on time. Ethereum core developer Tim Beiko said there were probably two reasons. First, given the testnet $ETH was worthless, there was less incentive to run a validator and monitor it. Second, there was a large amount of withdrawal credential changes processed right at the fork. Given this was the first time people could submit those changes, there were many more that needed to be processed, which could lead to missed blocks and attestations on low-resource nodes. But he expected that the condition on the mainnet will be better than on Goerli.

Goerli is the last testnet to test the Shanghai upgrade. Ethereum developers will have a meeting this Thursday to confirm a date for the mainnet upgrade.
